Why do you call these ponds or lakes "lodges" Surely lodges are buildings where people can shelter and rest ????

They are called "lodges" as they where used on the surface of coal mines to keep water to cool down compressors and other machinery. It was a place were the water could "Lodge" until required for use. Also I think they were used to store water pumped from the mines.
