How did you find wiganworld?    Researching family history

Comments Absolutely fantastic site - I've spent more than an hour just browsing - I've found tons of really useful information for my research on Settle/Makinson family - particularly the cemetery details and spent a lot of time getting side tracked on really interesting history pages, well worth a visit and I'm sure I'll be back - Thank you.

Comments I have been visiting the site for years now and think that it is wonderful. However I have a small suggestion in relation to the photos in the album. Instead of having the most popular 6 photos on the left of the screen, why not have 6 at random? My reason for saying this is that the current system is open to abuse. The top 6 remain the same as everyone who looks at the page will look at photos they are interested in plus the top 6 just because they are there. Also, anyone who has a mind to can get their picture into the top 6 just by clicking on it and the back button many times (I admit to doing it myself)

Comments How many of you are caring for a partner, family member or friend? Did you know there is a new Carers Centre opening in Hindley, to offer information on where you can get support (in different ways)to continue your caring role? It costs no more than a phone call to make an enquiry and could make a big difference to your way of life.

Comments Thank you Patricia:-) I will phone when visiting, my six year old grandson Alan will be with me, so another generation can see 68 Market Street.
It was wonderful to be able to tour. My sons Edmund and William love to tell the story of the cellar being the highlight of our tour. Not Stonehenge, the Tower of London, but the cellar of 68 Market Street.
Looking forward to our visit.
Thank you for being so kind.

Comments Ann Cronin, I used to work at Age Concern and remember you and your family coming around and taking some photographs. Age Concern is still there, but I left last year. I know they would welcome you to look around and would even ask the press to come and do an article. Just give them a ring on 01942 241972 and ask to speak with the Chief Officer.

Comments Thank you for your dedication to the history of your home. I cam e across your site whilst searching for infomation on Col. Sir Stanley Bell.

I have an old motor car, a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, owned by Sir Stanley. I am desperate for vintage photos of Sir Stanley and the car around the time he and Lady Bell owned Euxton Hall.

Comments Before anyone asks, I'm in Yorkshire doing missionary work!. Whilst browsing the Wigan World site, under the heading memories of Woodcock Street I spotted a letter from David Devine of Wigan, I think we could be related, my mother was Annie McNamee and her mother was Catherine Devine whose father was James Devine. The family seemed to be mainly located in the Scholes area (Cambridge Street ?. It would be great to hear from David and to find we are related.
Regards to all fellow Wiganer's

  Comments Hello Helen:

My goodness fruit boxes. I remember the navel oranges wrapped in purple tissues, and the smell of the fruit. When I last visited Wigan the tenants of 68 Market Street, at that time it was a Age Concern ,let me and the family in to take a tour. My best memory was the celler, sounds funny, but the smell took me back to very happy times. Use to visit the kittens, Nana was not too happy that I spend so much time there.

Thank you so much for the posting.
Regards,
Ann

  Comments Hell Mark:

I believe we are related. Just phoned my Mum, she remembers Tony, Tom and Jean. It certainly is a small world. I will be visiting Wigan this year, staying with friends in Ashton in Makerfield. Would be lovely to meet and have a pint.
Regards,
Ann
