I understand some milk it. But my father in law now has one, he's had a stroke, my grandparents both needed them due to broken bones in old age, and being unable to walk far. So although I do understand not everyone is honest, the ones that fake it are ruining it for the minority.
I hope you never have a stroke then, or lose your mobility. I assume, even if you do, you won't be applying for one? It's not the blue badge holders fault car parks carry a charge, so why not take it up with carpark owners?
i have a disabled badge simply because when i have a severe problem with my COPD i cant get my breath, luckily this only happens once or twice a year and that is the only time that i take up a disabled space, but i must say having the badge has made me more aware of the people who use them, sometimes i feel that badges are used by people who dont own them, ive seen young people jump from vehicles and run into supermarkets etc and you know that they are not disabled its these people who get the real disabled a bad name.
The question of why blue badge holders don't pay could be something to do with choice. An able bodied person can choose to walk to where they want to go or catch a bus into town then walk to the shops. For those with walking difficulties they have no other choice than to park a car as near as possible to where they want to go.
I have no problem at all paying to park my car because the bays are usually in a position to help me....if you have a bee in your bonnet about blue badges go and sit in your car and tell the abled bodied arsholes who park in the same bays...Idon't wish invalidity on anyone but statements like yours push the boundaries...
Please don't think Im asking you to disclose any other health problems you may have other than COPD, Im just asking if you don't mind, is it solely the COPD that you have your blue badge for?
bumkin doesn't seem to be suggesting here that disabled people shouldn't get preferential parking space allocation. I.e a guaranteed parking space close to amenities. The issue seems to be payment.
Does being disabled mean that you should also get your parking for free? Does a disability automatically mean you are on a low income? If so, shouldn't others on a low income get their parking free too, but in a regular parking space? If not, why not?
I don't have the answers - but it raises some interesting questions.
quite right oy im not without money just breath at times and then thats when i need to be close to my destination, but i am quite willing to pay in fact when im bad and all the spaces are taken i would willingly pay double so as not to be gasping in front of other people.
I agree with the badges but quite rightly why shouldn't holders pay (people on low income have to pay) what next free bus rides for blue badge holders. I am 100% behind having priority parking closer to amenities. they really help people with disabilites. (slightly off track but) what I can't stand is the idiots who park there when clearly there is nothing wrong with them - that's not saying that you can always tell by looking what illness's & disabilities people have. I mean builders vans parking in these bays at supermarkets for example. don't get me started on parent & child places as well. these spaces should be monitered and fines in place for pepole who use them just because they're lazy.
I am in possesion of a blue badge which I rarely use,I suffer from angina and heart problems and once in Blackpool I was abused by of all people a parking attendant, when I pointed out to him that just because I wasn't limping it didn't mean that I didn't need a blue badge,he said anyone can tell lies to a doctor. how appalling anyway I said to him "go and get yourself stuffed you moron and get yourself a proper job, but this is why I dont use my badge much even though I am perfectly entitled to do so.
well I'm on incapacity benefit and I have to pay for presciptions even though I need regular medication. I know those on low income get them free and people with certain medical conditions but hey that's life. what I mean is that a lot of people with disabilities can afford parking but do need the spaces closer to wherever they need to go. so maybe a means tested system would be better to decide who should pay or be exempt from parking charges. or maybe make everybody pay but drop the charges in general so eveyone benefits. see I could be prime minister and do a better job :)
I was just asking as I have C.O.P.D, Asthma and Angina and can't get anything coz I live with my partner, Im not at the stage of the oxygen just yet, (inhalers and Nebulizer) I can't even get an exemption certificate for prescriptions which at the moment is costing me an arm and a leg, but my arms and legs won't be much use to them in a couple of years Thanks for replying.
Bumkin,I have a Blue Badge, along with COPD affecting me almost 24/7.I also have two other serious conditions but I won't bore everyone with the details.I don't know you, but I would swap your health for mine any day of the week.Heres hoping that you never need a Blue Badge.
Tracy i cant see why living with your partner should stop you getting a badge have you asked your doctor for help, also before i finished work i needed lots of medication so i got a twelve month perscription its a lot cheaper.
Ive just purchased a pre payment certificate, my Doctor says, that they are not very forth coming at giving medical exemption certificates out, as they get slapped on the hands
I had no alternative but to return to work after 2 years of not being able to claim a penny, just could not afford to stay out of work, my partner was having to keep me and his elderly mother. I take my meds and Nebulize before and after work (during if needed).
I have been told I will be completely housebound by the time I am 54, I am now 44, well they won't give me anything, I'll be damned if they think Im gonna give them the satisfaction of predicting my lifespan!!
If there are spaces on the main road (Wigan Lane)- you will not need to pay. In fact these places are often closer than the designated disabled places in the hospital. These are roadside places and carry the same regulations as those elsewhere in Wigan. But don't park round the corner (Clifton Cres?) they are residential places for residents of WN2 permit holders only.
I have been into Leigh this morning and because I felt O.K. I left the disabled bays free and parked my car in an ordinary bay on my return there was a council van parked next to me without displaying a valid parking ticket,he was also parked on the line and he had knocked my wing mirror in.I dont know wether or not he is allowed to park free cos he drives a council van,but he shouldn't be neither should he be allowed to use the car park, they should be made to pay like everyone else, after all they get handsomely paid for what they do
Council workers on the lowest rates are not well paid, the lowest rate only just being above the minimum wage. Only those at the top in managerial posts above a certain scale are well paid!
