 where is the nearest steam railway to wigan and when does it run can anyone tell me please, i would love a day out on one .

 East Lancs Railway is the place if you want proper trains not narrow gauge.

thats half way between the two main stations of Bury and Rawtenstall
its usually a good day out.
i go regularly with my grandkids

That depends, I endured the same sandwiches every day for three years. I hated ham and pickle , but that's all I got.
It got so bad that I had to stop making them and went to the chippy instead.

Owd Dave, We are going on a railway jouney to Edinburugh by steam train with a few hours in the city & a meal is provided, I cant tell you exactly when but i think its somtime in may but you come back on an ordinary loco, If my Brother in Law reads this he will proberly put the detail on because he is booking the trip,

owd dave,there is a steam train trip on good friday (2nd april )leaving wigan north western station at 8-35 am arriving edinburgh at 13-50pm. you then have 3 n half hours to explore edinburgh,coming back on a diesel traction.information from www.railwaytourin.co.uk

 I emember travelling to Manchester Victoria from Wigan Wallgate every day in the late fifties.The station came to life when the engine pulled in,hissing and steaming.Same faces every morning sitting in the same seats doing the same thing,chatting,smoking and playing cards...like a friendly little village on wheels.Never once was I late for work .
